Just in case you missed it, the Google Doodle of the day is of Dr. Jonas Salk in celebration of what would have been his 100th birthday. Through funding by the March of Dimes (then known as the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis), Dr. Salk pioneered the vaccine that has now nearly eradicated polio around the world. My parents can remember polio as something terrifying and real that children in particular were susceptible to and was potentially and often debilitating. Today, my children don't even know what polio is. Thank you Dr. Salk!
