It's hard to believe we started this journey with the March of Dimes fourteen years ago. We are incredibly grateful for our family and friends overwhelming support of Team Tiny Feet every year!
Seventeen years ago Kirk and I sat in a NICU praying for just one more day. Praying for just one more test to go our way. Praying for just one more blessing. God and I had many bargaining sessions in that first year.
The day Hanna and Rachel were born we were told they had a 10% chance of survival. We were told "if they survive" to anticipate a greater than 3 month NICU stay, and a high probability of life long complications.
One might ask, after seventeen years why I'm still remembering this time in my life. A Mother's heart never fully heals from the unbearable fear of planning her own baby's funeral. A Mother's heart never heals from signing do not resuscitate papers for her own child. A Mother's heart never heals from watching her child struggle to breath, endure surgery after surgery, weekly blood draws, and recoil from her touch. A Mother's heart never heals from leaving her babies in the hospital for 92 days.
Hanna and Rachel were born at just 25 weeks gestation, joining the ranks of more than 500,000 other babies born prematurely that year facing the same challenges. Our family became members of a club we never asked to join, nor would we ever choose to join. In seventeen years many wounds have healed. But some wounds leave an ever lasting scar on the heart.
Seventeen years have gone by and our blessings are beyond our wildest dreams. In the last seventeen years we have had the extraordinary gift of watching our girls grow from incredibly sick babies into thriving, beautiful, amazing young ladies. Our lives will be forever marked by prematurity. Every day we face the challenges as a result of our girls extremely early arrival. But everyday when I get to hear "I love you, Mom" from all four of my children I thank God for our blessings, and will never forget how very different our story could be.
In the seventeen years since our girls' birth the number of babies born prematurely has declined ever so slightly. We aren't nearly close enough to understanding why 1 in 8 pregnancies end in prematurity. For these reasons we will continue to walk as Team Tiny Feet and support the mission of the March of Dimes.
Beautiful as always Karri! Thanks so much for all that you do!
Thank you so much for sharing Karri
Beautiful post! You are a true hero for babies!
We help moms have full-term pregnancies and healthy babies. And if something goes wrong, we offer information and comfort to families. We research the problems that threaten our babies and work on preventing them.
