Riley is 16 now and things are exciting. She's driving, she's about to be a Junior in high school and she's growing up. Anyway, the other day, she and a friend went to the mall (I was invited too). They decided to try on prom dresses and had a great time. Riley came out of the dressing room at one point and said, "I don't like this one. It shows my scar too much." I was confused. It was her PDA scar which Riley has literally never mentioned before. She said that it makes her back look deformed. I was crushed. I'm still a little crushed. I thought she looked beautiful. When I see her back, I think about how strong she is. She looks like a gymnast and a weight lifter...not deformed at all. We have so few reminders of her prematurity...just a couple of little scars. One is under her nose, one is her PDA scar and one is on her side where a lead left a mark. That's it...that's all that physically reminds us of 90 days in the NICU...be proud of that scar sweetheart. It doesn't define you but it shows what a fighter you are.
Oh I'm so sorry that she feels that way! But, I agree with you, I don't see a thing wrong with her back, I wouldn't notice a thing without really looking for it. I hope that in time she sees it as a mark of being a survivor and a fighter as opposed to anything else. Thanks for always sharing with us!

Ahhhh Riley! That scar is a battle wound... own it sweet girl! That said.... hugs to her as a 16 year old girl and hugs to you as her Momma.. I'm sure that stirred a lot of emotions.
