On Sunday night we went to see baby girl real quick & drop off some milk. To our surprise we got greeted with the news that she was graduating from the NICU to PCN!!!!! & somewhere between 5-15mins she would be brought up to the 5th floor we didn't know existed. We were so excited! The nurse's words were "she's doing far too good for the NICU" & it made us so happy! We couldn't believe in just a week she had graduated & went to the next step. She was still with the feeding tube & not really able to learn how to drink from the bottle but that was okay with us, all that mattered was the fact she was improving at her own pace & it seemed really quick for us. Yesterday I woke up in tears because all night was spent tossing & turning because I had severe back pain & my stomach on the left side was really hurting. After taking my last Percocet on Friday night I have been too scared to take any more because I think I took it too close to the last time I took the two Tylenol's causing me to have that high fever & the severe shivers & cold sensation....I think it was some sort of overdose or the fact I hadn't taken Percocet in a few days. I ended up just taking one of those with one Tylenol & an Aleve & after a few hours I felt better but extremely loopy like I was very tipsy near drunk since I took them with just a cookie in my stomach. After a while I called NICU to find out the PCN number & when I called PCN I was thankful I had it on speaker & my boyfriend & his mom were listening because the nurse told me the doctor needed to talk to me. The doctor said that Eden's problem with not being able to suck on the bottle for too long & eating from it came from the fact her tongue was tied & that was stopping her from being able to do the suction movements. She asked me if I knew what that was & I said no, she didn't really explain what it was but that she wanted to know if we could clip her tongue so that way she won't have any problems trying to latch on for breastfeeding or to bottles. As she was asking me that I looked at his mom & then at him & he gave me the thumbs up. So I told the doctor it was fine to clip her tongue & we asked about a heart murmur a doc thought she had heard when she was in the NICU & she said she hadn't heard about that & she hasn't heard one at all, so it was probably an innocent one that just went away. She also said that her jaundice has stood below 15 so she was never put under the light for it. But other than the tongue thing she is doing really, really good. When I hung up I looked at him confused because I didn't understand the tongue thing & instead of explaining it to me, he showed me. His tongue is the way hers is & he explained it to me & how he even has problems sometimes now with that bottom part of his tongue because it gets stuck on his teeth & it's very painful & that's why he gave me the okay to just get it fixed now than leave it alone.
Last night we went to see her for the first time in the PCN around 8:30 & after a little rough day seeing her made us feel so much better. He was telling me how come she's always sleeping when we see her & I told him because she's a baby! Then the nurse introduced herself & after talking to the other mom who's baby is rooming with Eden, she told us she has been doing very good & that she's still having problems with taking the bottle. & she asked if we wanted to feed her since it was close to 9pm & we said we had no problem with that. She asked me if I was shown how to check her temperature & how to change her diaper, I told her I was told how to do it & did it once downstairs. So she told us to go ahead & do those two things while she went to get her milk & that way we could start waking her up & getting her ready for feeding. I asked my boyfriend if he wanted to do the diaper change since he still hasn't done a diaper change & he said I could do that but that he wanted to do the temperature check. So we did that first & when he was done I started working on undoing her buttons on her onesie outfit & she was fighting me to get her cleaned up so he ended up assisting me on her diaper change. I asked him if he wanted to hold her because the first time he held her a few seconds later she spit up because it was right after feeding & he freaked out & was too scared to hold her after she had spit up. I wanted him to be able to enjoy her & holding her without anything like that happening, so he agreed. I picked up her & this time with a little more confidence then the last/first time I had tried to & I handed her over to him. His face lit up like a kid on Christmas & I was so happy because I hadn't seen him that excited & happy yet & it was such a beautiful moment to witness. She kept smiling at him & she kept looking at us & I was able to accidentally get her first smiling picture & he pointed out her middle finger was out too so we found it very funny.
While we had been struggling to change her one of her stickers on her chest had fallen off & wasn't sticking. So the nurse came in & said she needed to change it & put a new one on. After she fixed it, he felt confident enough to pick her up himself off her bed to keep holding her & I felt so proud of him! Baby girl was so hungry though that she put her face against his jacket where his nipple was & was looking for some milk! So we were cracking up real hard she was doing that & she was getting mad she couldn't get milk from his jacket, it was far too adorable! We had never seen her act like that but then again this was probably the second time we saw her awake but the first time acting this way. I had already asked him if he wanted to feed her & he said no that it was okay for me to do it but when the bottle was ready I asked him again & this time he was actually very excited to feed her, it would be the first time he fed her! The most beautiful thing that ended up happening was that when he was given the bottle so he can feed her...she ACCEPTED the bottle & then she started to CHUG down the milk!!! Both me & the nurse were shocked & he was too! He was worried she was drinking too fast but we told him to keep going so we could see how far she would go. Then when she started falling asleep he was trying to take the bottle out but she had a really good grip on it & it made us laugh pretty hard. When he was able to take it out, she woke up a bit & I grabbed her to burp her. I hadn't burped her before it we were at awe when she was on me & her face was on my shoulder & I had started to burp her. I thought I had heard her burp but then she started having the hiccups & I found it so amusing because it was so odd seeing & hearing her with them after being in my tummy with them. I handed him the baby back & she finished the bottle right away! We were so proud of her & we told her she did a very good job & how happy we were. She started to fall asleep on him & she was smiling even more. As soon as I started to hold her she let some gases go like she holds them just for me & it made me laugh pretty hard. When I went to put her down I realized she needed a diaper change so I changed her again with no problems this time & after the change we left. As we were about to leave the building I told him that he tricked me because he was supposed to do the next change & we just laughed about it because we were just so overwhelmed with her drinking the whole bottle with no problems with him.
Today I was woken up by a call from PCN & the nurse said that the doctor was about to do the tongue clipping & he needed my approval. So the doctor spoke to me for a minute or two & I gave him the approval. The nurse came back on the phone & told me some really good news! That she has been drinking ALL her bottles now so her feeding tube was out!!! Not only that, that whenever we came to bring the car seat so they can do the car seat test on her because she won't be there for long & SHE CAN GO HOME IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS!!! We are beyond excited & we really can't wait!! We are so proud of our baby girl & that after all these problems she will finally be coming home soon & I can't wait for them to tell us when she can go home! I'm glad she has been doing so good & even tho she was a preemie, she has been improving really quick! & not only that but I told my boyfriend last night that maybe all she needed was for him to hold her, give her some loving, & give her the bottle while working some daddy magic so she could FINALLY start drinking her bottles! I also told him that she is truly a daddy's girl since she decided to do all good right after last night's visit which was the most he was able to interact with her.
Aw I'm so happy of this news!!!! Big girl Eden! That is so great. My son had to have his tongue clipped too, very common. Keep us posted on the next few days!!!
