Looking for Advice- pregnancy after preemie

Hi All- My son was born at 25 w 3 d with zero warning. I was having back pain and then went to the hospital in the middle of the night. I was already fully dilated with no idea that I was in labor. My son was born 20 minutes later weighing 2 lbs, 2 ozs. He spent 116 days in the NICU and is now a healthy 2.5 year old. I am 22 weeks pregnant with our second boy. I have been seeing a specialist who is monitoring my cervix in case that is the issue. I was on progesterone shots but I had a decline in cervix length so now I am on progesterone suppositories. At my 22 week check-up my cervix length was 2.85 cm. I know they can only do cerclage until week 24 and only if the cervix length goes below 2.5 cm.

I have appointments at 23 weeks and 24 weeks to check cervix length again. I hope it won't drop any lower but if it does I understand what the next steps are. What I'm not sure about is what happens if the cervix stays about the same length. Has anyone been through a similar situation?

  • I hope the you get good news at your follow up appointment.   Like I said I have never been in the situation but I can only imagine how scary it can be.   Praying that your numbers don't drop any lower.  Please update us when you can.   Many many hugs to your worried heart.

I guess I should clarify that the high risk doctor will not do the cerclage unless I am below 2.5 cm. Because there was no diagnosis of CI for my son they don't want to place a cerclage unless absolutely necessary. I will hopefully get some more answers in the next few weeks. The high risk doctor also said that no restrictions or bed rest were needed. It's just a little confusing as I don't want another 25 weeker but I do trust my doctors.  I wish I could go on strict bed rest but right now it's not possible with work and everything else going on.

Hello and Welcome to Share. I am so sorry that you are having a difficult time during your pregnancy. I too have experience with a short cervix. I am not sure why your doctor is tell you that they can't place a cerlage unless your cervix measures less than 2.5. There is no hard rule anywhere that says that. I suggest that you get a referral to a high risk Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist and consult with them. I had a cerlage placed vaginally at 13 weeks because my cervix was measuring less than 5 cm. With my next pregnancy I had a cerlage placed teams abdominally and it is permanent.

In the meantime I would stick to strict bed rest to help keep pressure off of your cervix if at all possible. I hope you get some more answers soon and a better game plan. Sending you lots of positive thoughts and hugs.

  • Welcome to Share.  I'm glad to hear your 25 weeker is now a healthy 2.5 year old.  Im sorry that this pregnancy isn't going as planned.  Although I have never experienced this I know some have here.  I even shared you post with another mom in hopes that she can give you advice.  I hope that your length doesn't get any lower and that a cerclage isn't needed.   Please update after your next appointment and let us know how things are going.

    Much Love,

    Samantha
