I found out I had a shortened cervix during our first pregnancy. Sadly we lost our son who was born 17 weeks early at 1 lb 1 oz. My doctor said I would be forever high risk and would require a cerclage surgery if I got pregnant again. We were blessed to get pregnant just a few short months after our loss and I got the surgery right at 3 months. I remember how scared I was but my doctor assured me I was in great hands and it was best. The surgery was a success. The surgery detailed, fasting the night before, epidural, The surgery was quick, probably around 30 minutes, which required stitching my cervix closed. The only hard part was making sure I used the restroom before I could be discharged, lol, which was harder than I thought. And I was put on strict bed rest for remainder of my pregnancy. Those of you who may be needing cerclage or doctor has mentioned it you, its a blessing. My surgery was a success as we were able to carry our baby along to a healthy weight. He was only born 4 weeks early.
Hello thank you for sharing, I am in a similar position. I had the cerclage very early at 10 weeks but at 13weeks it had failed. I was dialated and had only 1.5cm left before the stitch. Another cerclage was placed 3 days ago and I have been told I will be on strict bed rest for the rest of the pregnancy. We're you on bed rest from 12 weeks? What was it like? Did you use other drugs to help the cervix? Thank you for your kind response.
And hearty congratulations on the birth of your son
Thank you Deeda. Yes I was in bed rest from 3 months till we delivered our son. If I was to go anywhere, they suggested wheelchair or for short periods as they didn’t want me up walking. The bed rest was hard as I’m the type of person who loves to go out, always a busy one but my husband was a big help. I was on no other drugs but I had to see my OBGYN or visit or hospital to see them every week to check my cervix.
Hello Sue Ann! Welcome to Share and thank you for sharing your story. I'm so sorry for the loss of your first son. I can't imagine the heartache. What a blessing your second son is. I look forward to hearing more about you and your family.
Thank you so much Karri.
Thank you for your response, I am currently in bed rest too with similar restrictions but I have a longer way to go, hoping for the best
You've got this Deeda.
I had a cerclage but had an early birth at 28 weeks and lost the baby.
Tabby, so sorry to hear that. We lost our first child at about 23 weeks and unfortunately I didn't find out till it was too late and my doctor said I would definitely need one if I was to conceive again, which I did.
