Vomiting from Prednisone or something else?

My son has BPD, a chronic lung disease and a g-tube because of it. He has been on Prednisone (prednisolone), for months. He is now almost one year old and still struggles with frequent vomiting. The vomiting is directly related to gas in his stomach and when we vent his g-tube, the air comes out and he is immediately relieved. Unfortunately, you're not always able to get all the gas pockets out of the stomach, esp. when he is sleeping... so often times, at night he wakes up throwing up. He was born at 26 weeks and once they started gastric feeds, he handled them without issue for almost 2 months. It was 4-5 days AFTER starting Prednisone back in October that he started having projectile vomiting. HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD A CHILD WITH THESE SYMPTOMS? We are convinced his is beyond normal preemie reflux for reasons which I mentioned above. Thank you!

I'm sorry that your little one is dealing with the yucks of all of this!!  I'm a bit late jumping in on this, but wanted to chime in on prednisone!!  I just recently completed a round of prednisone myself and the belly issues are truly a challenge.  I hope that the doctors are able to help with the issue at hand!!

My child hasn't taken prednisolone but I have. Following my pregnancy, I have had to take it for breathing issues. My stomach does not tolerate prednisolone. When I require a steroid for flare ups it has to be prednisone and even that is difficult.  But the issues I have from prednisolone are more acid reflux and ulcer related.

As far as the gas and projectile vomiting, my 26 weeker suffered with that before her milk protein allergy was discovered. Once she started a hypoallergenic formula, she immediately got better.

I hope you get to the bottom of it.

  • Hello and welcome to Share.

I am sorry that you are dealing with this! It sounds like you all are having a rough time.

Have you talked to your doctor about why they started prednisone? I am not sure what that medicine is for, perhaps now that he has been on it for months and his symptoms are getting worse, you can contact the doctor and ask about changing the medicine? Sometimes there are several medicines that do the same job, but some have way less side effects. Speak to the doctor and see what he or she thinks.

My son was born at 27 weeks, had a g tube, BPD, and a ton of gas. He was in pain a lot when he wasn't being vented like you mentioned. He also had a nissen procedure, so he could not vomit, so we did not deal with this exact issue.

Keep us posted, I hope you all figure something out soon!

    Huge hugs,

    Leigh
