Grunting Preemie

Im happy to announce we've taken out daughter home after 2 and a half months in the NICU! We are 2 weeks home and couldnt be happier. I am concerned about my daughters sleeping patterns. She seems to grunt throughout the night. It seems like shes in pain. She stops when shes held. Is grunting a normal preemie thing? Any suggestions on what to do!? We need to keep her in the bedroom because shes still on a monitor so we need to watch her closely. But shes soooo loud grunting and groaning neither of us are really sleeping.

  • Hi Rileysjourney, so happy to hear your baby is home! In regards to your baby's grunting noises, we suggest speaking with your baby's healthcare provider. This will help make sure your baby is not having breathing problems. Stanford Children’s Health web site has a fact sheet that states: “Grunting. This is a sound made by a baby who is having difficulty breathing. The baby grunts to try to keep air in the lungs to help build up the oxygen level. Another sound may be a moan or sigh when exhaling.” www.stanfordchildrens.org/.../default.page.
