Another Respiratory Ailment

My friends at M.O.D our son had been healthy for a while, but has begun to get frequent reapiratory illnesses :frown: This latest started Saturday with a fever, coughing, sneezing, and wheezing. Does this sound familiar to anyone here? If so, what does your doctor think you should do? We've had him in the bathroom with the shower running for steam, the meds too, and trying to get him sleeping with his head upon a pillow. :eyeroll: I'd appreciate any ideas on this!

    Lesley,
Since I last posted Richie's cold/allergy symptoms flared up again and he developed double ear infections, resulting in his right ear draining. He missed part of school last week, but luckily is back this week. Now my husband's got an ear infection, and I've got a sinus infection! Well I hope all is well for all our M.O.D moms here on Mother's Day, since you all deserve it!
  • Richie's Latest Illness
Monday Richie had a fever of 103 at 6:30 AM, after being up all night with coughing. He saw a doctor who said it was viral, and another doctor confirmed this on Thursday. He's been out of school all week, but lately has had no fever with his congestion.
  • Hang in there!!!

We have gone through similar bouts'. Sounds like you are on the right track. And as Karri mentioned about those medications. My daughter has had several attacks that we are now seeing a pulmonologist. So you could keep that in mind if this is a reaccuring thing.

    Take care,
    Tracy
  • I'm so very sorry to hear that your little one is so sick. That's awful.

Has your doctor prescribed any breathing medications, or bronchio-dilators such as Albuterol? What about Pulmicort, an inhaled steroid to clear up any inflammation in his airway?

Three of my children have inhaled medications for wheezing, and other Asthma symptoms. I'm not saying your son has Asthma, but he could have something similar, such as Reactive Airway Disease.

I would encourage you to speak to your doctor about this. Hang in there,
    Karri

    Hi Lisa,

My name is Lindsay and I work at the March of Dimes.

Sorry to hear your son is under the weather. It sounds like you are doing the right things to help your son through this, although we usually recommend elevating the top of the mattress or dropping the foot of the mattress instead of using a pillow. Sometimes a vaporizer or humidifier can help.

Even though this is the time of year for these types of colds, since you say this is one of several recent bouts, it sounds like it's time to take him to his doc to make sure there isn't an underlying issue (maybe an ear infection?) that keeps this hanging on.

    Hope he is better soon.
